What you can sell

Any digital product, delivered automatically

If it is a file your customer downloads, you can sell it here. Attach a license key when the product needs one.

Software & one-time downloads

Sell desktop apps, plugins, installers and tools as a one-time download, with an optional license key issued on payment.

E-books & documents

Sell PDFs, reports and guides. Watermark PDF files with the buyer's details to discourage casual sharing.

Courses & materials

Deliver lesson files, worksheets and resources as a purchase or as a recurring subscription that renews on its own.

Templates & assets

Sell design files, spreadsheets, documents and asset packs. Supported types include PDF, DOC, XLS, ZIP and TXT.

ZIP bundles

Package multiple files into a single ZIP and deliver them together, with the same download limits and secure links.

Licensed products

Sell software that needs a key. Delivery and licensing come from the same purchase, so the customer gets the files and the key together.

Automated delivery

Delivery happens the moment the invoice is paid

No manual sending, no watching for payment confirmations. When the payment clears, BillingServ provisions the order and gives the customer a download page straight away.

Files are served over short-lived, signed links tied to the customer's connection, so a link cannot be passed around and reused. Delivery is idempotent and renewal-safe, so a subscriber who renews keeps access without a duplicate order or a broken link.

On payment
  • Order provisioned
  • Download page ready
  • License key issued
Every download
  • Signed link
  • Short-lived
  • Tied to the buyer

Links are signed and expire quickly, so files stay behind the purchase rather than out in the open.

Download controls

You decide how downloads behave

Set a download policy per product so the file is as open or as protected as the sale needs.

Open access

Let paying customers download the file as often as they need while their access is active. Best for simple, low-risk products.

Download limits

Cap the number of downloads per purchase. Once the limit is reached, the link locks automatically. Good for high-value files.

Expiring links

Set a time-limited link that expires a set number of hours after the first download. The countdown starts when they first click, not at purchase.

Secure signed links

Files are never served from a guessable URL. Each download uses a signed link that is short-lived and tied to the buyer's connection.

PDF watermarking

Stamp PDF files with the buyer's email, order number and date on every page, so a leaked copy points back to who shared it.

Renewal-safe

Subscribers who renew keep their download access without a new order or a dead link. Access follows the billing.

Software licensing

Bundle a license key with any download

Selling software rather than a static file? Turn on licensing for the product and BillingServ issues a license key on payment, right next to the download.

The key can be activated on a device or server, validated online or offline, and reissued within the limits you set. Because it lives in the same purchase, the license suspends if the invoice goes unpaid and expires if the order is cancelled, with no manual clean-up.

See how software licensing works

One purchase delivers
  • The download
  • A license key
The key supports
  • Activation limits
  • Online & offline validation
  • Reissues
  • Domain locking

Licensing is optional per product. Sell a plain download, a licensed download, or both.

How you charge

One-time, recurring, or a mix of both

Digital products are not all sold the same way. Charge once for a download, or run it as a subscription that renews and re-delivers on its own.

One-time purchase

Sell a download for a single payment. The customer pays, the files and any license key are delivered, done.

Recurring subscriptions

Charge monthly or yearly for ongoing access, updates or new files. Renewals bill and re-provision automatically.

Overdue handling built in

When a subscription payment fails or goes overdue, access follows the billing so you are not giving files away for free.

Payments, tax & fraud

Take global payments and stay compliant

Connect the payment gateways you already use and collect in multiple currencies. BillingServ handles the invoicing, tax and fraud screening around each sale.

Apply VAT on invoices and support EU e-invoicing with Peppol BIS 3.0 and UBL 2.1, plus EU VAT number validation. Screen orders for fraud with the FraudLabs Pro integration. BillingServ is not a merchant of record, so you keep your own payment relationships and stay the seller on record, without the revenue cut that model takes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Selling downloads, delivery, license keys, payments and tax.

What digital products can I sell with BillingServ?

You can sell any downloadable file, including software and one-time downloads, e-books and documents, course materials, templates and ZIP bundles. Supported file types for delivery include PDF, DOC and DOCX, XLS and XLSX, ZIP and TXT. You can also attach a software license key to any product.

How does digital delivery work?

When the invoice is paid, BillingServ provisions the order automatically and gives the customer a secure download page. Downloads are served over short-lived, signed links that are tied to the customer's connection, so the files cannot be freely shared. Renewals re-provision automatically.

Can I limit downloads or make links expire?

Yes. Choose a download policy per product: open access, a capped number of downloads, or a time-limited link that expires a set number of hours after the first download. Once the cap is reached or the link expires, it locks automatically.

Can I sell software licenses alongside a download?

Yes. Turn on licensing for a product and BillingServ issues a license key on payment alongside the download. The same purchase delivers the files and the key, and the key can be activated and validated through the licensing API.

How do customers pay, and can I sell subscriptions?

Sell digital products as a one-time purchase or as a recurring subscription. BillingServ collects payment through the gateways you connect, including Stripe, PayPal, GoCardless, Worldpay, CoinGate and more, so you are not locked to a single processor.

Does BillingServ handle sales tax and VAT?

BillingServ applies VAT on invoices and supports EU e-invoicing with Peppol BIS 3.0 and UBL 2.1 XML, plus EU VAT number validation. It is not a merchant of record, so you keep your own payment relationships and remain the seller on record.
